The Church Has Left the Building

Tonight, we of the Vineyard Church of Waterville have had a great opportunity to serve 10,000 of our closest friends at The Taste of Greater Waterville.

We picked trash and had conversations with folks. And we had VERY cool, sage green “The Church Has Left the Building” t-shirts! Cool. Easy. Too easy? Can it be outreach if we enjoy ourselves? 🙂

Of course it can!

But for me, things really cranked up a notch when a couple of us went into the Beer Tent for a drink. Woah. The diversity of the crowd was amazing. People I work with. People that frequent clubs. People that were pounding beers.

I’m so far out of that scene. But I’m so glad we were there.

I’m convinced Jesus would’ve been right in the midst of everyone. So that’s where I want to be.

I ended up helping the staff by collecting empty (and abandoned) beer bottles for the trash and recycling bins. That was so much fun. It was a lot easier to interact with people when I had a purpose.

It was also interesting to be open to the Holy Spirit’s invitations. Waterville is so diverse. We saw people seriously addicted to drugs, lonely people, well-rounded happy people, people actively following Jesus in ways that resonate with VCW.

These are my people. I’m honored to have been called here by God.

Good night.

[Update: I was thinking about yesterday and realized the very fact that we were there at Taste was our responding to God’s invitation. Just showing up! So simple!]
